We live in a (wire-lessly) wired environment today and because of this connected nature it becomes difficult to remain oblivious to surrounding activities.
In 2007, the then chief minister of West Bengal justified police atrocities (that killed several people and injured many) against people who were protesting against government land acquisition. The chief Minister was not only unapologetic about the police’s high handedness but also termed the action “necessary and just”. The whole apparatus of the then government justified each and every action that followed that massacre!
Fast forward to 2011 election the people uprooted the government. The chief minister lost his seat in a history making shameful defeat. In democracy voters don’t forget and forgive. They always teach a lesson!
June 2011, the central government carried out a brutal and cowardly act of repressing people’s fundamental constitutional right of “right to protest peacefully”. The government controlled police in a methodical manner attacked the sleeping, unarmed public and the government justified it. History repeats itself, but I never thought that it will repeat itself with such a quick frequency. After 48 hrs of the incident the Prime Minister termed the police atrocities justified without a shred of remorse.
This political hot air has once again put India’s future in uncertain zone. The delayed reaction of the PM on the Delhi incident has raised questions on his already questionable authority on the government. The PM is just a mask of the government and it is run by people behind the scenes is now more than clear. It seems that he will not be the next prime ministerial candidate for 2014 general election (of the ruling party ) because of the widespread unacceptability he has generated among the masses.
That gives rise to more dangerous scenario where the so called “next in waiting” prime minister will be the ruling party’s choice, the person for whom the ruling party has kept the chair warm for the last two terms. The current irony is that the future PM has not even uttered a single word on the Delhi incident and that is more worrisome. The silence is un-comforting.
So the nation is heading towards a politically troubled times where the opposition (with several chinks in its armour) is hoping to cash on a strong public outrage. On the other hand the ruling party seems to be heading for a certain disaster with its multiple blunders.
Will 2014 be a Déjà vu? Time will tell and for that we all must wait!
